Overview

For over two decades, the Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) has provided grants to support small and mid-sized theatres in New York City and State. A.R.T./New York offers microgrants to all A.R.T./New York members (both organizations & Individuals) who would like to hire specialized professionals to advance anti-oppression and accessibility efforts at their organizations, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

It is important to A.R.T./New York that we do not perpetuate the white supremacist practice of gatekeeping by restricting our members to only the consultants we have previously identified. Applicants are welcome to work with any professional they choose, regardless of whether or not they are on this list, and we will continue to update the list as we learn more from our community about different people doing this work. For deeper, long-term organizational change work outside of what this microgrant can financially support, we recommend inquiring about our Theatre Leadership Program.

NOTICE: Microgrants Update

Microgrants Program on Pause -

Last year we distributed a total of $59,000 through the Microgrant program to 47 member companies. We are delighted to have supported so many Organizational and Individual members as they advance their anti-oppression and accessibility efforts at their organizations, and through their productions. We are continually encouraged by the robust creative output of our membership.

Since its onset, the program continues to change and evolve. We are taking a pause in FY24 to analyze how this program can best meet our members’ needs. Please contact us at [email protected] with any

These grants are not intended to fund directors, stage managers, actors, writers, or other similar positions; they are intended to fund specialists.  These specialists can either be hired to support a specific project or to work with an organization as a whole; they may also be hired by independently-formed cohorts of organizations who may wish to pool their resources in order to have the professional(s) support all of their organizations.

If you are looking for a place to start this work, you may want to check out the specialists and organizations listed below.

Grant Funding

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Applicants must have already begun conversations with the professional(s) they are planning to hire before submitting an application. These microgrants can only be used for hiring people; they cannot cover the cost of technologies or services such as automated captions. Microgrant amounts are determined on a case-by-case basis to meet the needs of each applicant.

Grants are given to organizations at a maximum of $2,000 and at a one-to-one match with the applicant. Organization applicants are welcome to apply for multiple microgrants in one fiscal year and may receive a maximum of $2000 in total grant(s) awarded per grant cycle (July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023).

Grants are given to Individuals at a maximum of $1,000, and no match is required with the applicant. Individual applicants are welcome to apply for multiple microgrants in one fiscal year and may receive a maximum of $1,000 in total grant(s) awarded per grant cycle (July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023).

Grantees will be expected to submit a brief report on the use of the grant funds within 6 months of receiving the funding.
