Update - Creative Space Program

As of January 31, 2023, the Creative Space Program has served 332 member companies that have rented over 34,000 hours of subsidized studio space from A.R.T./New York since July 2022. We are delighted to have supported the development of so many new works for the stage and are encouraged by the robust creative output of our membership. This increased demand from our members has exhausted the available subsidy for the remainder of FY23. We anticipate that we will resume offering the Creative Space Program subsidy on July 1, 2023. Please get in touch with us at [email protected] with any questions.

Overview

The Creative Space Program is funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation, who has historically been a leader in supporting subsidized rehearsal space programs at A.R.T./NY and throughout the performing arts sector in NYC. We recognize the critical need for low-cost rehearsal space and are committed to continuing to find support for this subsidy and other space programs.

Eligibility & General Guidelines:

All A.R.T/New York member companies in good standing with budgets of up to $3.5M will be eligible to book subsidized rates for space up to 500 hours per 6 month period. Any rentals for revenue-generating activities do not qualify for the subsidized rate.

  • The half-year periods run from January to June and July to December. Renters will be alerted once their cap has been reached.

  • Once a member company has reached the 500-hour cap for the period, each studio’s standard Member Discount Rate will be charged for any additional bookings. Please note that if the 500-hour cap is reached and bookings are released within our cancellation policy to bring the total below the cap, A.R.T/New York may adjust rental hours booked at the standard Member Discount Rate to the Creative Space subsidized rate.

  • Renters must complete the rental guideline agreement form, which outlines our COVID prevention safety procedures and protocol, including our COVID-19 vaccination proof mandate. Failure to comply will result in the cancellation of rental booking.

  • Want to become a member to receive the extra subsidized rental rate? Read more about member benefits and apply here.

  • Members will be able to book our larger studios at the $12 rate to host presentations or developmental readings, so long as no revenue is generated at the event.

  • Business Affiliates of A.R.T./New York are ineligible.

  • All activities in the studios must comply with A.R.T./New York’s rental guidelines, including the A.R.T./NY Covid 19 Safety protocol.

Exemptions:

  • Studio E (available for weekly lockouts only) and the Conference Room (not available for rehearsal use) at our [email protected] are not eligible for the rental at the subsidized rate.

  • For revenue-generating events such as classes, seminars, and ticketed performances, renters will need to pay the standard A.R.T./New York Member discounted rate for each studio and activity.

Cancellation Policy:

  • Our standard cancellation for refund and deposits will apply to all rentals, including subsidized Creative Space.

Changes from Previous Creative Space Grant Cycles
