The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) is pleased to present SIGHT LINES, an exhibit of drawings of New York City street life by Brooklyn based artist Sara Harvey.

These drawings have movement; they are lively, whimsical and honest. Using a paper sketchbook and a 1.5 mm Faber-Castell India Ink Pitt Artist pen, (which she often then renders as vectors to color digitally), Harvey documents the city that has been her home for nearly twelve years. With her own unique style, she treats her subjects with kindness and her locations are recognizable by those who know and love New York intimately.

In describing how she came to start creating this type of work, Harvey says, “I worked in coffee shops the first few years after I moved to New York in 2008, which gave me a street-level, front-row view of everything. When I wasn’t pulling espresso shots or taking improv class, I was walking from the apartment I shared on the Upper East Side to—everywhere, all the time. So, ‘street view’ is how New York first impressed itself on me, the skyscrapers but more so the sidewalk-level delis, slice shops and all the fast humanity on foot. I was an art minor before my college advisor pointed out I had already fulfilled my requirements with literature electives. So, I drew off and on until 2012, when I started carrying a sketchbook in earnest—cartoons, illustrations and sketches of the city around me.”

Harvey has had comics published in SpiralboundGreenpointers and Hot Hot Phone and her work has been used in advertising campaigns. In addition to drawing, Harvey was a journalist for ten years and studied comedy writing at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. She has taken continuing education classes at the School for Visual Arts to hone her craft.

An opening reception will take place on Thursday, March 5 from 6pm to 9pm. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served and the artist will be in attendance.

Gallery Three is located on the third floor of South Oxford Space, at 138 South Oxford Street in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn.  Regular exhibit hours are 10am to 5pm daily. Additional viewing hours are easily arranged by calling 718-398-3078.
