Intended Audience: for A.R.T./New Yorm members that are considering a Capital or Design application this cycle (deadline 1/13/26).
This session will offer:
- Strategic guidance on selecting the right track (Design / Small / Mid / Large Capital)
- A clear checklist of NYSCA requirements and documentation
- Proven approaches behind successful applications
- Plain-language insight into compliance and reimbursement
Led by Andrew D. Hamingson and Sarah McLellan, the workshop will blend practical strategy with real-world examples from organizations that have secured major NYSCA Capital awards.
For years, A. D. Hamingson & Associates has partnered with arts and cultural organizations statewide to navigate NYSCA’s Capital and Design programs—helping leaders assess readiness, shape project narratives, translate big ideas into fundable scopes of work, and submit successful proposals. Projects the firm has supported have secured significant state investments, including:

- National Black Theater ($10M)
- Vineyard Theatre ($4.5M)
- Storm King Art Center ($7.5M)
- Arts Center at Lake Placid ($7.5M)
- Wild Center ($2.5M)
- Symphony Space ($4.9M)
Andrew D. Hamingson serves as a Capital Strategist for cultural organizations statewide and has led or advised major fundraising efforts for landmark projects including St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn; Manhattan Theatre Club’s Friedman Theatre on Broadway; and campaigns at Atlantic Theater Company, The Public Theater, and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Since founding A.D. Hamingson & Associates in 2011, he has guided fundraising and strategic planning for organizations including Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Classical Theatre of Harlem, National Sawdust, The New Group, McCarter Theatre, Second Stage, The Bushwick Starr, Under the Radar, Seagle Festival, Arts Center at Lake Placid, and Williamstown Theatre Festival. In 2020, he served as Interim Executive Director of Second Stage Theatre. Previously, as Executive Director of St. Ann’s Warehouse, he raised $31.5 million for its new home in the historic Tobacco Warehouse. As Executive Director of The Public Theater, he managed its first $35 million capital campaign. Earlier, as Managing Director of Atlantic Theater Company, he launched a $10 million capital campaign and oversaw the Broadway transfer of Spring Awakening. He spent 12 years at Manhattan Theatre Club, where he led development efforts that raised $40 million to renovate the Friedman Theatre. Hamingson holds two Tony Awards for Spring Awakening and Hair. He is a Trustee of 59E59 Theatres, Dance Heginbotham, and Building for the Arts, and has been a Visiting Professor at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale since 1995.
Sarah McLellan is a mission-oriented management and fundraising professional who prioritizes process, inclusion, and creativity to develop dynamic solutions for arts organizations. Consulting engagements with ADH&A include interim development leadership for the American Repertory Theater (Cambridge, MA), New Yorkers for Culture & Arts, Storm King Art Center ($7.5M NYSCA Capital award), Symphony Space ($4.9M NYSCA Capital award), Two River Theater, Williamstown Theatre Festival, the wild project, and the Arts Center at Lake Placid. Previous leadership roles include Director of Advancement at The Field, Executive Director of Ensemble Studio Theatre, Managing Director of Clubbed Thumb, and Assistant Administrative Director of the Juilliard Drama Division. She has also managed grant programs at Theatre Communications Group, worked in education at Manhattan Theatre Club, and spent four years in artistic development at Williamstown Theatre Festival. McLellan holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College.
